Sending messages to the world

Spreading the Amabie coloring project to the world

A messenger of light emerging from the sea - the legend and prayers of AmabieAmabie is a Japanese yokai (specter) said to have the power to ward off epidemics, and is recorded as having suddenly appeared on the sea off Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture) in 1846 (the third year of the Koka era).He is said to have appeared as a half-man, half-fish creature with a beak, accompanied by mysterious phenomena such as a light emitting from the sea.

According to legend, Amabie said, "An epidemic is about to break out, but by drawing my image and showing it to people, you can prevent the disease." Since then, he has become a beloved symbol of protection from disaster and disease.
This mysterious being was not only depicted by artists and spread among the common people, but has also come back into the spotlight as a symbol of hope and prayer in modern times, such as during the pandemic.

Amabie is a rare yokai in Japanese yokai culture that "gains power through drawing," and the images evoke a connection between people and the prayers entrusted to them. A being that transcends time and lives on at the intersection of art and faith, folklore and society.
